15 Signs You May Be Underfueling, Even If You Think You’re Eating Enough

You don’t have to be dieting to be underfueling. Many active women eat healthy, train consistently, and still aren’t getting enough energy to support their bodies.

You meal prep. You eat healthy. You never miss a workout.

Yet you’re constantly tired. That nagging injury just will not heal completely, but it feels good enough, so you keep training. You’re working hard, but somehow it feels like your body is working against you.

Many active women assume they’re eating enough because they eat much more than their friends or family. They eat when they’re hungry and stop when they’re full.

So they should be fine, right?

Unfortunately, eating healthy and eating enough are not always synonymous.


Over the years, I’ve worked with many active women who eat what most people would consider a lot of food, but still are not eating enough to support both their activity and their body’s basic physiological needs. They leave meals feeling full, enjoy a balanced diet, and genuinely believe they’re fueling themselves well. Yet they’re still underfueling.

Your body needs energy for far more than exercise. It needs energy to keep your heart beating, your brain functioning, your hormones balanced, your immune system working, your bones healthy, and your muscles recovering. Exercise increases those energy demands even further.

When you consistently do not eat enough to support both exercise and normal body function, your body begins making compromises.

Think of it like a monthly budget. Imagine you want to buy three pairs of shoes that cost $300 altogether, but you only have $200 to spend. You cannot buy all three, so you have to decide which ones are most important.

Your body works in much the same way. Exercise, recovery, hormone production, immune function, brain function, bone health, and metabolism all draw from the same energy budget. When there is not enough energy to support everything, your body starts making trade offs. It prioritizes the systems that keep you alive and reduces energy to the functions it considers less essential.

This state is called low energy availability, or LEA. It can present as a cluster of symptoms and be known as Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs)

LEA can affect runners, cyclists, triathletes, lifters, busy moms who exercise regularly, recreational athletes, and weekend warriors. In other words, it can happen to almost anyone who is active, not just elite athletes.

The challenge is that underfueling rarely announces itself with one obvious symptom. Instead, it often shows up as a collection of subtle signs that many women dismiss as normal.

Here are 15 signs your body may be asking for more fuel.

1. You’re Constantly Thinking About Food

When your body is not getting enough energy, your brain responds by increasing thoughts about food. This is often called food noise, and it is one of your body’s natural survival mechanisms. Your brain is trying to motivate you to find food.

Many of my clients are surprised by how much mental space food occupies. They find themselves constantly thinking about their next meal, saving recipes to Pinterest, browsing cookbooks, planning what they will eat later, or watching cooking videos for hours.

If this sounds familiar, it is worth paying attention. Food noise is not a sign of a lack of willpower. It is often your body’s way of asking for more fuel.


2. You’re Frequently Hungry

Feeling hungry is normal. Feeling hungry all the time is not.

When you are not eating enough to meet your body’s energy needs, hunger hormones increase to encourage you to eat. At the same time, your body begins conserving energy by slowing processes that are not essential for immediate survival.

Most adults should feel comfortably satisfied for about three to four hours after a meal and one to two hours after a snack. While everyone’s appetite is a little different, consistently feeling hungry much sooner than that may be your body’s way of telling you it needs more energy.

Rather than trying to ignore your hunger or convince yourself it is “just cravings,” consider that your body may simply be asking for more food.


3. You’re Rarely Hungry

This one surprises many people.

It may seem strange, but some people who are underfueling rarely feel hungry.

Not eating enough is a form of stress on the body. In response, your nervous system shifts into a stress response, releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. One effect of this response is that digestion slows down so your body can prioritize other functions.

From an evolutionary standpoint, this made sense. If our ancestors were running from danger, digestion could wait. Blood flow shifted away from the digestive tract and toward the muscles needed to survive.

Today, the same response can make hunger feel muted. Some people even experience nausea, an unsettled stomach, or a lack of interest in food, making it even harder to eat enough.

If you rarely feel hungry despite being active, skipping meals because you “just aren’t hungry” may actually be a sign that your body needs more fuel, not less.

4. You’re Frequently Tired

It’s the twenty first century. Let’s be honest. Most adults are tired.

So how do you know if your fatigue is simply part of a busy life or a sign that you are not eating enough?

When you consistently underfuel, your body does not have enough energy to support both exercise and normal day to day function. Over time, that energy shortage can leave you feeling physically and mentally drained.

Maybe you crash every afternoon. Maybe you wake up feeling like you never slept. Perhaps you rely on caffeine just to get through the day, or you simply do not have the motivation you used to.

While fatigue can have many causes, consistently feeling exhausted despite sleeping well and taking care of yourself is worth paying attention to. Sometimes your body is not asking for more coffee. It is asking for more food.

5. Your Workouts Feel Harder Than They Used To

One of the earliest signs of underfueling is that your training simply starts to feel harder.

Maybe your pace is slower at the same heart rate. Your power numbers are not where they used to be. The weights that once felt manageable suddenly feel heavy. Or perhaps it takes much longer to recover between workouts.

Training is only half of the equation. The adaptations you are working so hard to achieve happen during recovery, and recovery requires energy.

When you are consistently underfueling, your body cannot fully repair muscle, build new tissue, or make the physiological adaptations that improve performance. Instead of getting stronger and faster, you may find yourself plateauing or even moving backward despite working just as hard.

Before assuming you need a better training plan, take an honest look at your nutrition. Many active women simply are not eating enough to support the amount of exercise they are doing. Research suggests that carbohydrate intake is particularly low among active women, which may contribute to poor performance and recovery.

6. You’re Always Sore

Feeling sore after a challenging workout is normal. Staying sore all the time is not.

Exercise creates tiny amounts of muscle damage. Normally, your body repairs that damage, allowing your muscles to become stronger.

That repair process requires energy.

When you are underfueling, your body does not have the resources it needs to fully recover. Muscle repair slows down, recovery takes longer, and soreness can linger for days.

If you constantly feel like your muscles never quite bounce back before your next workout, it may not be because you need another recovery tool or a different supplement. Your body may simply need more energy.

Persistent soreness is also one reason active women who are underfueling are at greater risk for injuries over time.

7. You Keep Getting Injured

Every athlete gets injured from time to time. But if you barely recover from one injury before another appears, or an old injury keeps coming back, it may be worth taking a closer look at your nutrition.

Underfueling affects far more than your muscles. It also influences the hormones that help maintain healthy bones, tendons, and ligaments. Over time, consistently low energy availability can reduce bone formation while increasing bone breakdown, making injuries more likely and slowing the healing process.

Stress fractures often receive the most attention, but underfueling can also contribute to persistent tendon pain, recurring muscle strains, and injuries that never seem to completely resolve.

If your body feels like it is constantly breaking down despite training wisely, your nutrition may deserve just as much attention as your training plan.

8. You’re Getting Sick More Often

Do you feel like you catch every cold that goes around? Or does it seem to take weeks to recover from illnesses that everyone else gets over in a few days?

Your immune system requires a tremendous amount of energy to function well. When your body is consistently underfueled, it begins conserving energy wherever it can, including the immune system.

As a result, you may find yourself getting sick more often, taking longer to recover, or feeling like your immune system just is not as resilient as it used to be.

Of course, getting sick occasionally is part of life. But if frequent illnesses become your new normal, underfueling may be one piece of the puzzle.

9. You Feel Cold More Often

If you are always reaching for a sweater while everyone else is comfortable, your body may be trying to tell you something.

Feeling cold, especially in your hands and feet, is one of the classic signs of underfueling.

Think about when your phone battery drops to five percent. It automatically switches into Low Power Mode, dimming the screen and shutting down features that are not essential so the battery lasts longer.

Your body responds in much the same way. When energy is limited, it lowers heat production and reduces blood flow to your hands and feet so it can prioritize your brain, heart, and other vital organs.

If you constantly feel cold for no obvious reason, it is worth considering whether your body simply needs more fuel.

10. Your Menstrual Cycle Has Changed or Disappeared

Your menstrual cycle is often called the fifth vital sign because it provides valuable insight into your overall health.

When your body does not have enough energy, one of the first systems it begins to conserve is reproduction. Your brain senses that energy is limited and reduces the hormones needed for ovulation. As a result, your menstrual cycle may become irregular, lighter than usual, or disappear altogether.

Many women assume this is simply part of training harder or getting older. It is not.

A regular menstrual cycle is a sign that your body has enough energy to support normal reproductive function. If your cycle has changed without another clear explanation, it deserves attention.

One important note: Hormonal birth control can mask these changes because it creates a withdrawal bleed that is not the same as a natural menstrual cycle. That means someone can have low energy availability without realizing their body has stopped ovulating.

11. Your Hair Is Dry, Brittle, Thinning, or Falling Out

Hair growth requires energy.

When your body is not getting enough fuel, it begins directing energy and nutrients toward the organs that are essential for survival. Hair growth becomes a much lower priority.

Over time, this can lead to increased shedding, slower hair growth, thinning hair, or hair that feels dry and brittle.

Underfueling can also contribute to nutrient deficiencies, particularly iron and zinc, which may further affect hair health.

While hair loss can have many causes, including genetics, thyroid disorders, and stress, it is also a common sign of low energy availability and should not be ignored, especially if it occurs alongside other symptoms on this list.

12. You’re Struggling to Sleep

Poor sleep can be one of the most frustrating symptoms of underfueling.

Many women describe feeling tired but wired. They’re exhausted, yet they cannot fall asleep. Or they wake up in the middle of the night and struggle to get back to sleep.

When your body is not getting enough energy, stress hormones like cortisol can remain elevated. At the same time, hunger signals may become stronger, especially overnight. Both can interfere with your ability to get restful sleep.

From your body’s perspective, this response makes sense. If it believes food is scarce, staying alert increases the chances of finding it. Thousands of years ago, that response may have helped us survive. Today, it usually just leaves you staring at the ceiling at two in the morning.

If you are sleeping poorly despite practicing good sleep habits, it may be worth asking whether your body needs more than just a better bedtime routine.

13. You Feel More Irritable or Anxious

Have you noticed yourself becoming more irritable lately? Maybe you’re snapping at your partner, feeling overwhelmed by small inconveniences, or finding that your patience is much shorter than it used to be.

When your body is not getting enough energy, it responds by increasing stress hormones like cortisol. At the same time, changes in blood sugar, hormone levels, and brain chemistry can all influence your mood.

As a result, you may feel more anxious, emotional, impatient, or on edge, even if nothing else in your life has changed.

While stress and anxiety have many possible causes, consistently underfueling your body can make it much harder to feel emotionally resilient.

14. You Have Brain Fog or Trouble Concentrating

Have you ever walked into a room and immediately forgotten why you were there? Or found yourself rereading the same paragraph three times because nothing was sticking?

Your brain requires a constant supply of energy to function well. When that energy is limited, concentration, memory, decision making, and mental clarity can all suffer.

Many women describe this as brain fog. They know they should be able to think clearly, but everything feels just a little slower than it used to.

If you’ve been blaming yourself for feeling forgetful or mentally drained, consider whether your brain simply needs more fuel.

15. Your Digestion Feels “Off”

Many women are surprised to learn that digestion requires a tremendous amount of energy.

When your body is trying to conserve energy, digestion is one of the systems that often slows down.

This can lead to symptoms like nausea, feeling full quickly, constipation, bloating, or a stomach that simply does not feel quite right.

These symptoms can become frustrating because they often make eating enough even more difficult, creating a cycle that is hard to break.

If your digestion has changed alongside several of the other symptoms in this article, underfueling may be part of the picture.

Why These Symptoms Often Occur Together

If you’ve been reading through this list and found yourself thinking, “Oh my gosh…that’s me. And that one too.” First, know that you’re not alone.

(And if you skipped straight to this section…I know. I see you;-)

The important thing to understand is this:

Your body isn’t broken.

It’s doing exactly what it was designed to do.

When your body does not have enough energy to support everything it needs to do, it begins prioritizing the systems that keep you alive. Your heart keeps beating, your lungs keep breathing, your brain keeps functioning.

Other processes, like hormone production, bone maintenance, muscle repair, hair growth, and reproduction, receive less energy because they are not immediately necessary for survival.

The symptoms you’ve been experiencing are not signs that your body is failing you.

They are signs that your body is adapting to an energy shortage the best way it knows how.

That is good news.

Because if inadequate energy is the underlying problem, many of these changes improve when your body consistently receives the fuel it needs.

What Should You Do If Several of These Sound Familiar?

If several of these signs sound familiar, here are three things I’d encourage you to do.

1. Don’t panic

Many women develop low energy availability or REDs without intentionally restricting food. In fact, many are genuinely trying to eat well and simply do not realize how much energy their bodies need.

2. Don’t ignore it

Your body is giving you important information. The earlier low energy availability is recognized, the easier it often is to recover.

3. Get the right support

Recovery is rarely as simple as “just eat more.” It involves understanding your training, nutrition, recovery, health history, and individual needs.

Working with a sports dietitian or sports medicine professional who understands low energy availability and REDs can save months, or even years, of confusion and frustration.

Final Thoughts

Underfueling rarely looks dramatic.

More often, it looks like an active woman who is doing everything she believes is healthy, yet still feels exhausted, struggles to recover, gets injured, or simply feels like something is not quite right.

If that sounds familiar, know this:

Your body is not working against you.

It is working for you.

Every symptom on this list is your body’s attempt to adapt to an environment where there simply is not enough energy to support everything it has been asked to do.

The encouraging news is that, with appropriate nutrition and recovery, many of these changes are reversible.

You do not have to figure this out alone. Recovery begins with understanding what your body is trying to tell you and creating a plan that supports both your health and your active lifestyle. Your body has been talking to you all along. Sometimes it just needs someone to help translate what it’s saying.
